Calgary Ginger Beef is one of Canada’s most famous dishes.

The popular Canadian beef stir fry was invented by a chef from Calgary who then spread it throughout Canada into local Chinese restaurants.

It is one of the tastiest foods that originated in Canada and today we have the best ginger beef recipe you can find on the internet.

It is quick and easy to make and of course delicious to eat! Are you ready?

Ingredients for the Ginger Beef recipe

Below is a list of ingredients that will help you make this delicious ginger beef recipe.

Beef tenderloin – A great choice for steak, but flank steak will do just fine too.

Cornstarch – Used to coat the meat before frying. A cornstarch dredge is much better than a flour one. It has a crisper texture and is lighter.

Vegetables – A large onion, a few carrots, some fresh ginger, and a few green onions.

Soy Sauce – There’s a ton of soy sauce in this dish. Some brands of soy sauce are quite salty. Use low-salt soy sauce when cooking so that you don’t end up making something that’s too salty to eat!

Rice vinegar – I really enjoy the taste of rice vinegar in foods like this, but white vinegar is just as good.

Sesame oil – because I cook so often, I keep a small container of sesame oil on my kitchen counter at all times.

If you’re able to get it, great! If you don’t, just use olive oil instead.

Brown sugar – yes, you’ll need to use it. It adds flavor to the meat and creates a sticky, sweet sauce.

And, it will help to neutralize the salty taste of the soy and the sour taste of the vinegar.

Black pepper – Regular ground black pepper is added, but no additional seasoning is added to this dish (no salts).

Sesame seeds – this helps give the dish some extra flavor and texture, but they can be left out if you don’t want them.

Measurements for the ingredients you will be using in this recipe

1 pound skirt steak, sliced thinly

1 cup cornstarch

2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more for frying

1 large white onion, finely chopped

1 1/2 cups carrots, julienned

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

1/2 teaspoon dried red chili flakes

1/2 cup light soy sauce

2 tablespoons vinegar

1 tablespoon sesame oil

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 cup brown sugar, lightly packed

2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted

1/4 cup green onions, thinly sliced

Steps to make the delicious and crispy Ginger Beef

Step 1: Cut the steak into thin slices.

Cut your meat into thin slices across the grain.

Step 2: Make the batter for the beef.

Combine the corn starch, flour, eggs, and white pepper in a large mixing dish then add the beef. Mix well.

Set it aside until after you’ve made the sauce.

Step 3: Prepare the ingredients for the sauce.

Add the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, white wine vinegar, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes into a mixing bowl.

Step 4: Deep-frying the beef.

Heat two cups of vegetable oil in a frying pan or Dutch oven to about 350 degrees F.

Cook the beef in batches until browned, about 4 minutes per batch. Then place each batch on a paper towel-covered platter.

Step 5: Cook the sauce.

Sauté the garlic, grated fresh turmeric root, and crushed red peppers (optional) for one minute, then add the sauce.

Just simmer for one minute, then turn off the heat.

The sauce won’t be thickened too much because it is supposed to soak into the battered meat.

Step 6: Combine everything

Add the meat to the pan and let it cook for 1-2 minutes so the marinade can penetrate the meat.
Step 7: Serve it with rice and garnish it with green onions and sesame seeds.
